The starting test controls the entire answer
Do not enter zero merely because the pool has never been dosed by you. Fill water, previous products, and residual salt from earlier operation can all contribute to the current reading. Test representative water with a method suitable for the installed salt system, follow its sampling instructions, and compare the result with the generator's independent indication. What the ppm calculation is approximating
The screen reports a useful operating estimate, not a laboratory determination of every dissolved constituent.
Concentration gap
Only a positive difference between target and current salt is dosed. If the current test already meets or exceeds the target, the calculator returns no additional salt rather than a negative removal quantity.
Water-like density approximation
Salt kilograms are estimated as litres of pool water multiplied by the ppm increase and divided by 1,000,000. This treats the dilute pool approximately as 1 kg of solution per litre and the product approximately as dry salt contributing to that increase.
Exact dose versus bags on hand
The calculated pounds or kilograms are the dose estimate. Whole bags are rounded up once for purchasing convenience; owning the last bag does not mean its entire contents belong in the pool.
A staged addition is easier to correct
- Set the equipment-specific target
Read the current manual and product label rather than copying a neighbour's ppm. Manufacturer targets differ by system and revision; even one Pentair guide's recommended value should not be generalized to every salt cell.
- Measure the calculated mass

- Add according to the label
Keep circulation and the salt-cell operating state exactly as the manufacturer directs. Distribute product using the approved procedure, protect finishes, and do not allow undissolved piles to remain on a surface.
- Allow circulation, then retest
Add in stages when the volume or starting measurement is uncertain. Wait the specified mixing period, sample again, and calculate only the remaining gap instead of assuming the first estimate landed perfectly.
Conditions that deserve a pause
- A suspiciously high or inconsistent salt result should be confirmed before any product is added; adding salt is easy, while removing it generally requires water replacement or another manufacturer-approved correction.
- Product purity, moisture, mineral blends, and package tolerances can shift the delivered sodium chloride mass away from the ideal dry-salt assumption.
- The calculation does not balance pH, stabilizer, calcium hardness, alkalinity, sanitizer demand, or water replacement. Salt ppm is one operating parameter, not a complete water-care prescription.
- Mass-based ppm is formally tied to mass fraction. IUPAC's definition compares constituent mass with total mixture mass, which is why the calculator's litre-based shortcut must be understood as a pool-operating approximation.
Keep the next decision attached to the evidence
Save the date, test method, measured ppm, assumed water volume, target, product name, and amount actually added. A later reading can then reveal whether the volume estimate or product assumption needs adjustment. Without that record, an apparent change could be measurement variation, dilution from rain or refill water, splash-out, backwashing, or a true dosing difference.
When the only uncertainty is a litre-versus-gallon entry, the calculator can switch those volume units directly. The useful workflow is measure, calculate, add conservatively, circulate, and verify—not calculate once and treat a rounded bag count as a maintenance schedule.
