Basic Allowance for Housing is tied to the permanent duty station, pay grade, and dependency category, not simply the residence chosen by the member. Enter the ZIP associated with the orders, then inspect the returned Military Housing Area. A nearby installation, mailing ZIP, or home address can map differently. Build a complete recurring off-base housing comparison
The optional budget layer adds entered rent or mortgage, utilities, renter or homeowner insurance, and parking, commute, or other recurring fees, then subtracts that total from the selected monthly BAH. Keep deposits, furnishings, and other one-time move-in cash outside the monthly fields. Add pet charges, maintenance, tolls, or similar recurring costs to the combined field when they apply.
BAH is a flat allowance rate, not reimbursement of an individual lease or mortgage. DoD's MHA component percentages describe rate methodology at an area level; they are not an itemized entitlement for a particular address. A concession can change the first-year effective rent without changing renewal cost, and a lower-rent home farther from duty can add transportation expense, so use current written amounts rather than treating one advertised price as the complete budget.
