Audit compound growth with a contribution-and-interest schedule
Track opening balance, deposits, interest, and ending balance for every period or summarized year. Sum the contributions independently, then check that ending balance equals opening principal plus deposits plus modeled interest. Preserve full precision for periodic interest and round only for display. Adding rounded row interest can otherwise disagree with the final balance by several cents over a long horizon.
Run a no-contribution check against the closed-form lump-sum equation and a zero-rate check where ending balance equals total deposits. Extreme frequencies approach continuous compounding but do not remove the need for rate definitions. A negative return requires a model that permits it; bank interest scenarios generally should not be made negative simply to represent fees.

Align compound frequency with cash-flow frequency
State whether the annual rate is nominal or effective, choose the number of compounding periods, and place contributions at the beginning or end of their declared intervals. A nominal rate compounded monthly uses r/12 each month; an APY should not be divided by twelve as though it were nominal. Convert rates deliberately when the product disclosure and calculator convention differ.
The opening principal compounds for the full horizon, while each later contribution compounds only after it enters. Beginning-of-period deposits receive one more growth period than otherwise identical end-of-period deposits. If contribution frequency differs from interest frequency, use the workbench's conversion rules and verify the schedule; casually applying an annual rate to monthly deposits can shift both timing and result.

Interpret compound interest without confusing it with certainty
Compounding magnifies a consistently positive rate because prior interest remains in the base. Real investment returns fluctuate and fees remove capital before future growth. Deposit rates can reset. Taxes may apply when interest is credited rather than at the final date. The displayed exponential path is conditional arithmetic, not evidence that the account will follow a smooth curve.
Compare nominal ending value with purchasing power when the horizon is long, but do not subtract inflation twice. Test lower return, higher fees, missed deposits, and delayed starting dates. A result can explain sensitivity to time and rate; it cannot identify an appropriate asset, contribution, or risk level for a person.
