Confirm how payroll labels the 2026 bonus
Publication 15 treats bonuses as supplemental wages, but the permitted withholding route changes when the amount is combined with regular wages, separately identified, or paid without prior federal income-tax withholding from regular wages. Before choosing a flat-percentage scenario, inspect the earning statement and payroll description instead of assuming that every one-time payment follows the same method.
The 2026 flat federal percentage for eligible separately identified supplemental wages remains a withholding mechanism. Payments crossing the annual controlled-group supplemental-wage boundary have a different mandatory rate on the excess. The federal tax calculator is the better place to examine annual ordinary tax brackets because payroll withholding and return liability answer different questions.
Layer employee payroll taxes onto the bonus wage base
Federal income-tax withholding is only one reduction. Social Security depends on remaining room under the 2026 employee wage base, Medicare generally continues without that wage ceiling, and Additional Medicare withholding uses the employer-paid year-to-date threshold. A bonus arriving late in the year can therefore produce a different FICA result from the same bonus paid before the Social Security wage base is reached.
State and local supplemental-wage rules are jurisdiction-specific and are not inferred from the federal choice. The calculator changes its state, locality, and payroll-program inputs after a work state is selected, while keeping planning rates editable and table-based amounts explicit. Compare an ordinary salary check with the bring-home pay calculator, then keep the bonus on its own line so a change in benefit deductions or local withholding is not mistaken for a federal rate change.
Reconcile withheld bonus cash on the annual return
The bonus joins other taxable wages on Form W-2. At filing, ordinary taxable income, filing status, deductions, credits, other income, and total payments determine whether federal tax is due or refunded. A 22 percent payroll withholding line does not prove that the bonus was taxed finally at 22 percent, just as a refund does not prove the bonus itself was overtaxed.
If part of the payment compensates overtime, do not automatically move it into the new qualified-overtime deduction. The qualified overtime deduction calculator accepts only the qualifying premium supported by the applicable 2026 federal rules, not every amount labeled overtime, incentive, or bonus.
Exclude bonus arrangements that need a different analysis
This estimate does not classify equity awards, noncash prizes, deferred compensation, signing arrangements with special facts, gross-up agreements, severance, tips, commissions bundled with wages, expatriate payroll, corrections, or multi-state sourcing. It also cannot decide whether the employer was permitted to use a particular supplemental-wage method on the actual payment.
Retain the bonus statement, regular-pay comparison, year-to-date supplemental wages, wage bases, W-4, and state forms. Current payroll records and official guidance control any real withholding adjustment. The page provides educational 2026 arithmetic and boundaries; it is not individualized tax, payroll, legal, or compensation advice.
A bonus review may also need the qualified overtime deduction calculator for confirmed FLSA premium, the salary calculator for ordinary gross pay, and the overtime calculator for declared hours and multiplier.
