The display follows a convention, not a new arithmetic law

In ordinary real-number arithmetic, division asks for a quotient q such that divisor × q equals the dividend. No real q can satisfy 0 × q = 8, so 8 ÷ 0 is undefined. This route deliberately shows +∞ for a direct positive nonzero value divided by zero and −∞ for a negative one, mirroring one familiar floating-point display convention. The same entry may produce Error or Undefined on another calculator.

ECMAScript's Number rules include signed infinity and specify that a finite nonzero Number divided by signed zero returns signed Infinity. Those are rules for a finite-precision software type. They do not convert Infinity into an ordinary real quotient, and they do not make all algebraic transformations involving division by zero valid. The result is kept terminal here so it cannot be stored in memory or silently reused in a later chain.

Why 1E99 is a useful device convention but not a theorem

Texas Instruments documents 1E99 and −1E99 as alternate inputs on TI-83 and TI-84 families that lack an infinity symbol. The notation means ±1 × 10⁹⁹, which is enormous but finite. A device may use it as an endpoint stand-in for a graphing or numerical workflow; the approximation is valid only within that documented workflow and its range assumptions.

OpenStax treats infinity in calculus through limits and unbounded behavior. That framework explains why values can grow beyond every chosen bound without assigning a largest real number.
