Distinguish nominal rate from the annual percentage yield
A nominal annual rate states the periodic rate before within-year compounding. APY expresses the equivalent one-year growth when interest remains on deposit under the stated frequency. For a nominal rate r compounded m times, APY is (1 + r/m)^m − 1. Monthly and daily compounding can therefore produce different APYs from the same nominal rate, while a one-year simple rate has no compounding uplift.
Enter the rate as a percent, choose the actual compounding convention in the account disclosure, and align term units. The projected final deposit assumes the stated rate remains constant and all interest stays in the account. It does not model tiered balances, variable-rate changes, bonuses, early-withdrawal penalties, minimum balances, fees, or promotional conditions. Those product terms can dominate a small APY difference.

Compare APYs only after aligning product conditions
APY is designed to improve deposit-rate comparison, but it cannot summarize liquidity, penalties, callable features, step rates, account fees, or insurance structure. A higher APY on a long CD may deliver less usable value when funds are needed early. Record the institution, product, quote date, term, minimum balance, compounding, penalty, and maturity instructions beside every scenario.
Interest earned in the calculator is gross and before tax. A maturity balance is not necessarily the amount available after an early closure. FDIC insurance covers qualifying deposits at insured banks within ownership-category rules, not investment products merely because a bank sells them. Verify the institution and aggregate ownership exposure rather than assuming each account name receives a separate $250,000 limit.

Annualize known interest with the Regulation DD day basis visible
The advanced path starts from an actual opening deposit, interest credited for a known term, and actual days in that term. It annualizes the observed return directly; no compound-frequency input is needed because the term interest is already known. Regulation DD Appendix A distinguishes 365-day and 366-day treatment in APY disclosures, so the date basis should not be hidden behind a generic months field.
Use the interest attributable to the same deposit and period, before mixing later contributions or withdrawals. An annualized observed yield can look extreme for a very short term because it extrapolates one small return across a year. It does not promise that the account will repeat the rate, and it should not be compared with a quoted APY until fees, balance tier, term, and disclosure convention match.
