Define what the gravel layer must do
A decorative garden strip, free-draining trench, driveway surface, and dense-graded structural base do not call for interchangeable stone. Record the supplier product name, size or gradation, intended use, and whether the design depth is loose, placed, or compacted. The calculator labels a material context; it does not choose an aggregate specification or silently assign a density.
FHWA describes granular base as a load-distributing and drainage component whose performance depends on grading, shape, durability, fines, and construction. A volume sufficient to cover the ground can still be the wrong material for frost susceptibility, permeability, or traffic. Product approval and pavement design therefore remain outside the quantity arithmetic.
Measure finished coverage and placed depth
- Partition the footprint
Break curves and irregular drives into rectangles, triangles, or measured stations. Add real sections rather than enclosing the entire outline in a large rectangle that includes lawn or planting islands.
- Enter the specified depth
Use the intended finished layer thickness for the selected aggregate course. If a pavement has subbase, base, and surface stone, calculate each material independently because depths and gradations can differ.
- Keep excavation separate
Removal depth may include unsuitable soil, bedding, or several courses. It is not automatically identical to the gravel volume delivered, especially where the subgrade varies.
Reproduce a one-yard check, a driveway layer, and a density error
- Simple check: one cubic yard at one declared density
Use Dimensions with a 12 ft by 9 ft rectangle at 3 in depth, 0% extra material, Custom density set to 1.5–1.5 short tons/yd³, and $40 per short ton. The result is 1.00 yd³, 1.50 short tons, and $60.00 because the geometry is 27 ft³ and the price multiplies the declared mass.
- Driveway layer: show the allowance separately
Enter 20 ft by 15 ft at 3 in, keep Dry gravel · loose at 1.35–1.385 short tons/yd³, add 10%, and enter $40 per short ton. The base 2.78 yd³ becomes 3.06 yd³; the displayed weight is 4.13–4.23 short tons and material cost is $165.00–$169.28. The range comes from density, while the increase from base to order volume comes only from the 10% input.
- Boundary check: density endpoints cannot run backward
Choose Custom density and enter a low value of 1.8 and a high value of 1.2 in the same unit. Calculation must stop at the high-density field because a maximum below the minimum would invert every weight and cost range. Confirm the supplier values instead of swapping result labels.
Match bulk density to the quoted condition
Laboratory dry bulk density
ASTM C29 measures aggregate in defined loose or compacted conditions. Its significance statement cautions that hauled and stockpiled aggregate can have different compaction and surface moisture, so a laboratory number is not automatically the delivery conversion.
Supplier conversion
Use a density or tons-per-yard value supplied for the actual product and sales condition whenever available. Confirm whether a 'ton' means a U.S. short ton, metric tonne, or another contractual unit before entering price.
Field compacted course
A target dry density or relative compaction comes from project testing and specifications. Do not reverse-engineer a truck quantity from a generic compaction percentage and present it as a code requirement.
Make overage and delivery increments visible
Spillage, subgrade undulation, edge feathering, compaction, and supplier minimums can all affect an order, but they are different issues. Select a project allowance from site observations and the construction plan, then show it as a separate input. If the quarry sells only full buckets, whole bags, or minimum truckloads, round after the calculated volume and mass are known.
For cost, align the rate with the computed unit. A price per cubic yard should multiply order yards; a price per short ton should multiply order short tons. Delivery, fuel surcharges, geotextile, excavation, grading, and compaction equipment require separate line items unless the quote explicitly bundles them.
Connect aggregate quantity to the complete assembly
For an interlocking surface, pass the measured area to the paver estimator and keep base gravel distinct from bedding and joint sand. If the top course is a compacted asphalt mixture, compare the handoff in the asphalt tonnage calculator instead of applying gravel density to the blacktop. Use the sand quantity calculator for a specified sand layer whose moisture and fine-particle behavior require a different density source.
The final purchase worksheet should retain product description, measured dimensions, placed depth, declared density and its source, allowance, rounded delivery unit, and exclusions. That record is more useful than an unexplained single tonnage because it can be revised when the supplier or field condition changes.
