Construct the masonry module from the selected unit
CMHA explains the familiar modular relationship: a unit commonly called 8 by 16 inches is typically 3/8 inch smaller in height and length so a 3/8 inch mortar joint completes the nominal module. Entering a 15.625 by 7.625 inch actual face plus 0.375 inch joints recreates a 16 by 8 inch module. Confirm the actual product and project joint because specialty sizes and specified joints differ.
A 20 ft by 10 ft wall has 200 ft² of gross face. With no openings and the 8-by-16 module, each installed module represents 128 in², or 0.8889 ft², and the ideal area quotient is 225 blocks. This is a useful cross-check because the dimensions align to whole 16 inch lengths and 8 inch courses; a different wall may produce partial courses and end units even when its area quotient is whole.
Draft courses and bond before adding an allowance
- Lay out elevations
Draw horizontal courses, corners, control joints, pilasters, bond pattern, and top condition. Count full, half, corner, sash, bond-beam, lintel, cap, and other units by type rather than calling every module an interchangeable full block.
- Frame openings structurally
Subtract the net face of designed doors or windows, then add jamb, sill, lintel, reinforcement, and special-unit requirements from the approved drawings. A large opening changes more than square footage.
- Name the uncertainty
Breakage, cuts, bond, corner mix, delivery damage, and repair stock can justify an explicit allowance. Derive it from the elevation and supplier packaging rather than presenting one waste percentage as a universal masonry standard.
Separate unit compliance from wall engineering
Product specification
ASTM lists C90-24a as the active specification for loadbearing concrete masonry units. Product conformance does not establish that a particular unit, thickness, or density is adequate for this wall and exposure.
Model-code wall provisions
The 2024 IRC model wall chapter addresses masonry construction, joints, support, reinforcement, and openings. The locally adopted and amended edition plus engineered or prescriptive project documents control the actual work.
Material companions
Mortar, grout, reinforcement, anchors, flashing, drainage, insulation, and finishes have independent specifications and yields. A block count must not claim to be a complete wall bill of materials.
Connect the wall takeoff to site and finish quantities
Establish unusual faces with the square-footage calculator and quantify already-designed footings, bond beams, or grouted shapes with the concrete calculator using their documented geometry and selected mix yield. Keep any specified granular base as a separate takeoff with the gravel calculator. For a property enclosure that combines masonry piers with panels, keep linear panel runs and masonry modules separate so post bays are not confused with wall modules.
Before procurement, reconcile the elevation count with pallet quantities, unit weights, lift and access limits, color or texture lots, corner types, lead times, and storage. Confirm wall purpose, loads, height, lateral support, moisture management, fire and energy requirements, foundation, reinforcement, inspection, and local code adoption with qualified participants. The result estimates whole concrete-masonry units from entered geometry; it does not design a retaining wall, certify a loadbearing wall, or approve a colloquial 'cinder block' product for construction.
