Why the Dark Ovulation Band Spans Three Calendar Dates

ACOG describes ovulation in an average 28-day cycle as occurring about 14 days before the next period, while real timing varies. The planner therefore shows the 12–14-day pre-period envelope as a darker band. Its dot uses day 13 as a visible midpoint. That dot is a central calendar estimate, not a measured hormone surge, ultrasound observation, basal-temperature shift, or guaranteed release of an egg.

The paler fertile band expands around the midpoint from five days before through one day after. It reflects the biological possibility that sperm may remain viable for several days and an egg for roughly a day. It does not attach a probability to each date, account for intercourse timing or fertility conditions, or say that pregnancy will or will not occur.

Separate Pregnancy-Test Timing From the Ovulation Guess

Expected-period marker

The first testing marker shares the projected next-period date because that is a familiar planning point. A delayed period can have many causes, so lateness by itself does not confirm pregnancy.

Early negative result

FDA explains that urine hCG may be below a test's detection ability when testing occurs too early. Follow the product instructions and consider repeat testing after several days if pregnancy remains possible.
