Prepare scrap items for a transparent weight-and-purity quote
Sort items by stamped karat or independently tested fineness before combining them. Record gross scale weight and unit, then identify stones, clasps, springs, solder, filled cores, or other non-gold components. Do not subtract guessed mass merely to match a buyer's number. A calibrated scale and documented assay are more useful than a hallmark alone when value is material.
Convert grams, kilograms, troy ounces, pennyweights, or explicitly labeled avoirdupois ounces using NIST factors. Apply karat divided by 24 or direct purity percentage to the eligible mass. FTC guidance explains metal markings but a stamp is not authentication. Ask whether assay, refining, shipping, insurance, settlement, or minimum-lot fees are already embedded in an offer.
A silver lot should be evaluated separately with the silver calculator because fineness conventions and market price are different.
Calculate gross melt value, then reconcile the buyer payout
The workbench shows timestamped USD gold and silver market references and copies the displayed gold quote into an explicit price field. Multiply pure-gold troy ounces by that exact price for gross melt value, then apply the buyer payout percentage and any flat charge. You can replace the market reference with a written dealer quote at any time.
A dealer may quote a payout percentage of melt, a price per pennyweight by karat, or a net amount. Translate each quote back to the same gross melt basis so comparisons are meaningful. Keep the source, timestamp, currency, scale reading, purity method, and deduction terms beside each offer. If the live feed is unavailable, enter a current documented price manually instead of relying on an old value.
When a scale reports ordinary avoirdupois ounces, use the ounce-to-grams converter before applying the separate precious-metal troy-ounce conversion to each purity lot.
Keep scrap-gold estimates outside transaction and tax advice
Gold prices move, and an indicative market feed can be delayed or temporarily unavailable. Confirm the displayed source and time before relying on it. The page cannot authenticate title, calculate tax basis or gain, determine reporting, or resolve stolen-property, sanctions, or estate issues. It does not recommend a dealer or sale timing.
Use qualified testing, calibrated measurement, current written offers, and appropriate professional help for consequential sales. This calculator supplies educational payout arithmetic only, not an assay, appraisal, dealer endorsement, purchase offer, investment recommendation, tax result, or legal opinion.
Distinguish scrap payout from jewelry appraisal
Scrap valuation assumes the item's relevant economic value is recoverable metal. Wearable design, maker, provenance, gemstones, antique character, and resale demand can exceed melt value. Conversely, refining loss and transaction costs can make an actual buyer offer lower. The calculator does not decide whether an item should be sold for scrap or preserved.
Obtain multiple written quotes for significant items and understand when ownership passes. Mail-in services add custody, shipping, loss, and dispute considerations. Do not provide serial identifiers or sensitive personal details to an unverified buyer. The arithmetic can expose deductions but cannot assess dealer solvency, fairness, licensing, or consumer-law compliance.
If a buyer quote is stated in Mexican pesos, translate its dated net amount through the peso-to-dollar calculator and keep FX fees separate from refining deductions.
