Map plantable ground as a set of simple shapes
Measure only ground that will receive sod. Break an irregular lawn into rectangles, circles, and other supported regions, then subtract patios, buildings, established beds, water features, and permanent hardscape without overlapping shapes. A 50 ft by 30 ft rectangle contributes 1,500 ft². Slopes should be measured or projected consistently with the installation plan rather than guessed from a flat aerial view.
For a composite yard, document each component in the square-footage calculator and bring the total back with a sketch. Recheck field dimensions after edging and bed lines are finalized. The area result cannot identify turf species, sunlight suitability, soil condition, irrigation capacity, drainage, or the local planting window.
Make the supplier's package the final unit
- Confirm physical coverage
Ask the selected farm or retailer for square feet or square metres per delivered roll or pallet, the grass and cut format, and whether the quoted number is nominal or guaranteed. Bethel Farms reports 400 ft² for its pallet while explaining that farm, grass, cut, and stacking make pallet coverage vary across the market.
- Apply a declared allowance
The worked case adds an entered 5% to 1,500 ft², producing 1,575 ft². Curves, angled cuts, damaged pieces, handling, and desired repair stock may justify another amount; five percent is an example input, not a universal sod standard.
- Round whole delivery units
At the example's entered 10 ft² per roll, 157.5 rolls becomes 158, supplying 1,580 ft² and leaving 5 ft² above planned order area. If a supplier instead confirms 400 ft² per pallet, the same order area becomes four whole pallets; never mix those package assumptions.

Before the truck
Complete grading, debris removal, soil preparation, amendments based on appropriate testing, irrigation checks, access, and crew scheduling. Sod should not wait while the site is still being shaped.
During placement
University of Minnesota Extension advises using fresh sod promptly, staggering seams, laying across slopes, keeping pieces tight, rolling, and maintaining moisture in its regional guidance. Follow local extension and supplier instructions for the actual climate and grass.
After placement
Water, rooting checks, mowing, traffic, and fertilization schedules depend on weather, soil, grass, and local expertise. Package arithmetic cannot promise establishment success or replace water restrictions and site-specific care.
Reproduce shape and package boundaries
- Simple ten-roll lawn
Enter a 10 by 10 ft rectangle, zero allowance, rolls, and 10 ft² coverage per roll. The measured and order areas are both 100 ft², so the exact and whole order quantities are both 10 rolls.
- Typical cut allowance
Enter the 50 by 30 ft rectangle, 5% allowance, and 10 ft² per roll. The calculation is 1,500 × 1.05 = 1,575 ft²; 157.5 rolls rounds to 158 and supplies 1,580 ft².
- Metric circle and pallet rounding
Choose a circle with 10 m diameter, zero allowance, pallets, and 50 m² declared coverage. The lawn is π × 5² = 78.54 m², so 1.5708 pallets becomes 2 whole pallets supplying 100 m². Rectangle fields must be omitted in this mode.
Keep soil preparation and landscape materials in their own plans
If a specified soil layer is required after evaluation, estimate its measured depth and declared supplier behavior with the topsoil calculator. Beds excluded from the lawn can be planned separately in the mulch calculator, while drainage aggregate belongs in the gravel calculator. Keep compaction, settlement, moisture, and delivered density visible as material- and project-specific inputs rather than importing them into sod area.
Before confirming the order, verify species and cultivar, harvest time, producer coverage, pallet deposit, delivery vehicle access, unloading location, weather, crew capacity, irrigation readiness, local rules, and return or cancellation policy. Preserve the base area, allowance, package coverage, whole units, supplied area, and surplus in the order record. That chain makes the estimate auditable and prevents a convenient generic pallet size from being mistaken for an industry-wide standard.
