Keep stock arithmetic outside execution and suitability decisions
Stocks can lose value, and the page cannot assess issuer quality, diversification, liquidity, order type, or fraud. Market and limit orders can execute differently from an observed quote. No result predicts a future price or instructs a trade.
Use broker records and current issuer disclosures and seek qualified investment or tax assistance where material. This calculator provides educational transaction arithmetic only, not a quote, order, performance audit, securities recommendation, tax return, basis opinion, or guarantee of profit.
Reconcile share profit without losing lot and currency detail
If multiple lots were sold, identify which shares the broker or tax record treats as disposed. Average price can summarize economics but may not match tax basis under specific identification or default ordering. Foreign stocks add exchange rates and withholding, and the purchase and sale may require different dated translations.
Preserve full precision and compare the calculated gross amounts with confirmations. A cents difference can reflect fee allocation or fractional-share rounding. Dividends are outside the trade profit unless entered through a separate total-return model. Do not add dividend income to sale proceeds while also using an adjusted price series that already reinvests distributions.
For a long call or put at expiration, use the options profit calculator because premium, strike, and multiplier differ from a share trade ledger.
Build the stock trade record from executed quantities and prices
Use confirmations rather than a chart's displayed price. Record trade and settlement dates, shares, execution price, commissions, regulatory or transaction fees, currency, and whether the position includes fractional shares. Partial fills can have different prices and costs; calculate a weighted total or enter each lot rather than choosing one convenient quote.
The simplified cost equals purchase amount plus entered buy costs. Net sale proceeds equal sale amount minus entered sell costs. Profit is proceeds less cost, and return on cost divides by the declared acquisition total. A short sale, option exercise, merger, spin-off, return of capital, or employee award can require a different basis workflow.
Calculate declared income and current yield separately with the dividend calculator without counting the same distribution twice.
Interpret stock trade return apart from annual performance
Trade return is not annualized unless time is included under a stated method. It does not measure volatility, drawdown, benchmark-relative performance, or opportunity cost. A profitable trade can have taken years, while a loss can coexist with dividend income. Comparing raw percentages across unequal holding periods and risks can mislead.
Taxes can depend on jurisdiction, holding period, basis adjustments, wash sales, account type, and other transactions. The calculator does not produce Form 8949 or determine gain character. Likewise, entered transaction fees may not include advisory charges or fund expenses. Use the result as a ledger cross-check, not a tax report or research recommendation.
Model recurring contributions separately with the investment target calculator because deposits and distributions break an endpoint-only return interpretation.
