January 1 is not the boundary used for this zodiac year
A Gregorian year number alone cannot settle the animal label for dates around January and February. This version follows one public, auditable convention: the first day of the first lunar month in the Hong Kong Observatory conversion tables. A UTC+8 date before that boundary belongs to the preceding Chinese calendar year; the boundary date itself and later dates belong to the new year.
That rule differs from traditions that use Li Chun, the Beginning of Spring solar term, for a year pillar. This HKO calculator does not offer or calculate a Li Chun/BaZi mode, so the two conventions cannot be mixed accidentally. Follow the instant into the HKO calendar step by step
The audit deliberately retains every date transformation that can affect a near-boundary answer.
- Verify local time and historical offset
Enter the recorded local date and clock time, then supply the UTC offset that actually applied at that place and date. The page does not perform a historical timezone lookup or infer daylight saving.
- Resolve one UTC instant
The local civil input and offset identify a single UTC moment. This guards against comparing calendar dates that describe different instants.
- Express that instant as a UTC+8 date
The selected convention evaluates the civil calendar used by the HKO tables. Near midnight, the UTC+8 date can differ from both the UTC date and the original birthplace date.
- Compare with the official annual boundary
The embedded HKO date for the first day of the first lunar month determines whether the selected Chinese year is the Gregorian-year number or the preceding one.

Each earthly branch corresponds to an animal label, so the same animal recurs after twelve selected Chinese years. The result shows the next same-animal year by adding twelve to the chosen year.

One label does not imply one personality
Millions of births share any animal year. The label is a calendrical classification under the chosen tradition, not scientific evidence of disposition, compatibility, luck, or a future outcome.
Boundary disputes usually signal different conventions
Two websites can assign different year labels to an early-February birth without either using broken modular arithmetic. One may change years at the first lunar month, another at Li Chun, and another may treat the entered local date without translating the instant to its reference zone. Record the convention before comparing the answer. This page makes HKO and UTC+8 explicit and refuses to output the unimplemented alternative.
For a date interval that crosses a boundary, the Time and Date Duration Calculator can count the civil days, but it does not determine a Chinese calendar year. Similarly, the Moon Sign Calculator computes lunar position at an instant; it does not look up an HKO lunar-new-year table. Similar vocabulary about the Moon should not collapse distinct methods.
Read future-table dates with the Observatory's caution intact
The official table is bounded, and a table value should not be extrapolated beyond its published period.
- Inputs are limited to dates whose converted UTC+8 calendar year can be evaluated in the HKO 1901–2100 material. An out-of-range date is rejected rather than guessed from an average cycle length.
- HKO notes that far-future calculated moon phases or solar terms can carry minute-level uncertainty and may shift a listed civil date when an event is close to midnight. Recheck a future boundary against the maintained table.
- The Tropical Sun Sign Calculator uses a separate Western 30-degree-sector convention. Matching or conflicting labels across the two pages have no scientific interpretive significance.
- Do not use an animal or Gan-Zhi year to make decisions about health, employment, relationships, education, finances, safety, or a child's expected character.
