Chronological age follows anniversaries rather than an average year
A Gregorian year can contain 365 or 366 days, and calendar months have different lengths. Dividing total elapsed days by 365.25 can be useful for a rough continuous-year measure, but it does not determine a person's completed chronological age. The familiar age in years changes on an anniversary, not whenever an average-duration quotient crosses an arbitrary decimal boundary.
The calculation therefore counts the largest number of completed anniversaries that do not pass the selected as-of date. It then advances through complete calendar months and finally remaining ordinal days. The total-day figure answers a different question and is shown as supporting information. Anchor the age statement to evidence someone else can check
A reproducible age statement needs two dates and a visible calendar convention, even when the arithmetic seems obvious.
- Transcribe the birth date
Use the date recorded by the relevant source and write it in unambiguous year-month-day order when moving it between systems. Do not infer a date from an age written elsewhere.
- Set the as-of date
Choose the date for the question: today, an application date, an event date, or another documented cutoff. A result without this second date will change meaning over time.
- Inspect the completed anniversary
Check whether the birthday has occurred in the as-of year. This catches the common mistake of subtracting only the year numbers before the anniversary arrives.
- Keep the remainder labeled
Months and days are calendar components after completed years; they are not interchangeable with a decimal fraction of a 365-day year.
