Choose course direction before converting area to length
Sketch the finished deck and draw board direction, borders, breaker boards, stairs, hatches, posts, and changes in elevation. The worked rectangle is 16 ft by 12 ft, or 192 ft², with field boards spanning the 16 ft direction. That assumption makes a 16 ft stock board potentially useful as one full course. Rotating the same boards, adding a picture frame, or introducing seams changes the stock-length plan even though deck area remains 192 ft².
Resolve bump-outs and clipped corners with the square-footage calculator, but retain their dimensions on the board sketch. Area is a cross-check, not a substitute for counting courses. A narrow final strip may violate product instructions or look unacceptable, so test the starting position and edge treatment before committing to a quantity.
Count full courses before converting to stock boards
- Choose the nominal board-width group
The 4 inch choice is modeled with a 3.5 inch actual face and the 6 inch choice with a 5.5 inch actual face. Those are planning assumptions for the reviewed board groups, not substitutes for the selected product's published installed coverage. Profiles with grooves, clips, overlaps, or trim can differ.
- Review the fixed side-gap assumption
This planner combines the modeled face width with a fixed 1/8 inch side gap; the 6 inch choice therefore uses a 5.625 inch coverage module. This is a visible local planning assumption. Trex directs installers to current product-specific guidance because material, temperature, fastening system, and board location affect spacing details.
- Count courses with internal gaps
Across the 12 ft width, n board faces contain only n−1 internal gaps. Solving (144 in + 0.125 in) ÷ 5.625 in gives 25.62 courses, so the layout needs 26 whole courses. At 16 ft per course and one 16 ft stock board per course, that is 416 installed linear ft and 26 boards before any declared spare allowance.
Read base boards, allowance, and perimeter separately
Full-length courses
When one 16 ft stock board spans each 16 ft course, the base count is 26 boards. The planner then shows its 10% allowance separately, rounding three additional whole boards for a total order of 29. A 45° selection uses a visible 20% total allowance instead.
Staggered seams
When a course is longer than the selected stock, the calculator rounds stock pieces upward within every course and does not silently reuse cross-course offcuts. A documented seam and cut ledger can identify safe reusable cutoffs and may change the purchase count.
Borders and stairs
The optional perimeter entry is counted as a separate extra border-board stock group. It does not subtract replaced field boards or model corners. Fascia, risers, breaker boards, blocking, border fasteners, and stair treads require separate takeoffs.
Reproduce simple, typical, and edge checks
- Direct-area approximation
Enter 240 square feet and choose the 6 inch nominal group. Because square feet alone does not define course direction or seam positions, the planner pools theoretical linear coverage and labels the result as an area-based approximation. Use dimensions when a rectangular course layout is known.
- Sixteen-by-twelve working deck
Enter 16 by 12 ft, choose the 6 inch nominal group, 90° decking, and zero perimeter. The 25.62 directional ratio rounds to 26 courses; one 16 ft board spans every course, so that row shows 26 base boards, 3 allowance boards, and 29 to order.
- Final-strip boundary
Enter an 8 inch run by 11.25 inch width, choose the 6 inch nominal group, and keep 90° decking. Two faces plus one internal gap cover only 11.125 inches, so the base needs a third course. The 10% allowance then rounds to one additional board in each displayed stock-length row.
Coordinate the surface count with the supporting structure
The 2024 IRC model deck provisions tie allowable joist spacing to decking material and thickness, demonstrating why selecting 12, 16, or 24 inches on center here cannot approve framing. The spacing choice only informs the rough field-fastener estimate. Local adoption, amendments, exposure, loads, preservative treatment, corrosion resistance, ledger details, lateral connections, guards, stairs, foundations, and manufacturer instructions all require independent review. For a wood-volume purchase, transfer the exact stock list—not merely deck area—to the board-foot calculator.
