Define the tally basis before measuring the first board
One board foot is the volume of a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. When thickness and width are entered in inches and length in feet, multiply the three dimensions and divide by 12, then multiply by piece quantity. Six boards measuring 1.25 inches by 7.5 inches by 8 feet total 37.5 board feet. Keep more precision in the subtotal than on the final purchase line.
The arithmetic is simple; the dimensional convention is not. The USDA Wood Handbook describes the traditional difference between nominal and actual surfaced lumber sizes, while NIST's current PS 20-25 standardizes softwood-lumber terminology and commerce practices. Ask whether a yard tallies rough dimensions, nominal dimensions, or measured net dimensions. This calculator uses the values entered and cannot infer the seller's contract basis.
Keep a separate row for every stock group
- Group truly matching pieces
Only multiply quantity when thickness, width, and length share the same tally basis. Live-edge boards, tapered slabs, shorts, and mixed rough widths should be measured individually or grouped under a clearly documented averaging method accepted by buyer and seller.
- Retain species and grade
Board feet compare gross volume, not value or suitability. Species, grade, moisture, defects, surfacing, certification, and figure can make two equal-volume lots commercially and structurally different.
- Reconcile invoice rounding
A supplier may round dimensions, each board, or the final tally under stated trade practice. Preserve the calculator's unrounded subtotal and compare it with the quoted method rather than changing measurements to force agreement.
Separate purchase volume from the cutting bill
Furniture and millwork
Parts must be nested around defects, grain direction, color, and machining allowance. Choose any overage from the actual cut list and stock quality; no universal waste percentage follows from a board-foot total.
Framing and decking
Repeated installed pieces are usually planned by length and spacing. Use the deck-board calculator for surface courses and stock lengths, then use board feet only if the supplier prices that exact lumber by volume.
Sheet goods
Panel coverage belongs in the plywood sheet planner. Square feet of panel face and board feet of solid lumber are not interchangeable measures, even when both products contain wood.
Use the total as a purchasing checkpoint, not a design approval
Before ordering, compare the tally with the material list, available stock lengths, moisture target, machining sequence, delivery access, and supplier grading rules. An allowance should be a named response to defects, end trimming, kerf, matching, reserve stock, and offcut reuse. Record that reasoning separately so another buyer can remove or change it without altering the definition of a board foot.
For stair stringers or treads, establish geometry in the stair geometry calculator before preparing the lumber list. For roof sheathing or finish coverage, begin with the roof area and package planner. Neither linked result selects species, grade, span, connection, preservative treatment, or structural capacity. Those decisions require the project documents, current product marks, and the code edition adopted by the jurisdiction.

- Definition check
Enter 1 in thick, 12 in wide, 1 ft long, and quantity 1. The calculation is 1 × 12 × 1 ÷ 12 = 1 board foot per piece and 1 board foot total. This confirms the 144 in³ identity without any purchase allowance.
- Small furniture lot
Enter 1.25 in, 7.5 in, 8 ft, and six equal boards. One board is 6.25 board feet; multiplying the unrounded per-piece value by six gives 37.5 board feet. Interpret that as gross measured volume, not guaranteed cut-list yield.
- Invalid and nominal-size boundary
A zero thickness must be rejected because it has no positive board volume. A nominal 2×4 is a different issue: enter 2 by 4 only when that is the tally basis, or enter measured 1.5 by 3.5 when physical finished volume is the question. The calculator does not silently choose between them.
