Begin with the pay period, not the annual headline salary
A useful Florida estimate starts by converting compensation into the same period shown on the expected check. Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly payrolls divide annual salary into 52, 26, 24, and 12 regular periods respectively; biweekly and semimonthly therefore are not interchangeable. Establish that gross-pay baseline with the salary calculator, then enter only cash earnings and payroll facts that belong to the period being reviewed.
Hourly pay needs its own evidence. Regular hours, the workweek, and any legally payable premium should be confirmed before they are multiplied. The overtime calculator can isolate hours and multiplier arithmetic, but whether time is compensable or exempt is an employment-law question. Bonuses and commissions can also follow supplemental-wage rules rather than the regular-pay sequence, so a normal paycheck model should not silently fold every irregular payment into salary.
Why Florida's zero line leaves federal withholding and FICA intact
For ordinary employee wages, the Florida state individual income-tax withholding component is zero. Federal income-tax withholding is different: an automated payroll method annualizes or otherwise converts the period's federal taxable wages, applies the employee's 2020-or-later Form W-4 filing status and Steps 2 through 4, uses the 2026 Publication 15-T schedule, and converts the result back to one paycheck. Inspecting a separate federal tax calculator can help explain marginal brackets, but annual return tax and payroll withholding answer different questions.
Social Security and Medicare are computed from their own taxable wage bases, not from the Florida income-tax line. A cafeteria-plan deduction may reduce one or more bases, while a Roth retirement contribution usually changes cash without reducing current taxable wages. Prior-year-to-date Social Security wages matter near the annual wage base, and Additional Medicare withholding depends on Medicare wages paid by that employer. The calculator therefore exposes distinct wage inputs instead of treating every item labeled pretax as identical.
Trace benefits, bonuses, and deductions without inventing Florida tax
Reconcile gross pay to net pay in layers: gross cash earnings, federal-income-tax wages, Social Security wages, Medicare wages, employee tax withholding, then deductions. If a separately identified incentive is being modeled, use the bonus tax calculator to keep the declared supplemental treatment visible. Health premiums, HSA or FSA amounts, retirement deferrals, garnishments, and after-tax benefits should be copied from plan or payroll records rather than assigned a tax effect from their label alone.
Florida reemployment tax does not belong in an employee deduction field. The Florida Department of Revenue describes it as an employer business cost and says workers do not pay it. Federal unemployment tax is likewise an employer-side item in the ordinary case. A paycheck can still contain documented insurance, retirement, court-ordered, or other deductions, but the absence of Florida personal income tax is not permission to create an offsetting generic state payroll charge.
Reconcile a Florida estimate against the actual stub
Compare the estimate with a check from the same 2026 pay frequency and confirm gross earnings, all three federal wage bases, Form W-4 revision, year-to-date Social Security and Medicare wages, additional withholding, and deduction timing. A benefit taken monthly from a biweekly payroll may appear on only selected checks. Small differences can also come from payroll rounding or a different Publication 15-T method, while large differences usually call for a field-by-field wage-base review.
This regular-pay model does not decide worker classification, multi-state sourcing, nonresident-alien adjustments, tip reporting, fringe-benefit valuation, stock compensation, supplemental-wage eligibility, or final federal return liability. It also does not calculate sales, property, corporate, or Florida employer taxes. Keep the pay stub, W-4, benefit elections, and authoritative 2026 publications with the scenario; the employer's payroll record and current agency guidance control an actual payment.
