Translate the transcript's symbols before entering a course
Start with the grading table for the correct school, program, and academic year. An A+ is 4.3 in this page's common letter preset, yet Illinois and Duke both publish undergraduate examples in which A+ is worth 4.0. Plus/minus values also differ: this preset uses one decimal place, while an institution may publish 3.33 and 3.67. If the published policy does not match the preset, switch to school-issued numeric points only when the official values fall inside this page's hard 0.0–4.3 input range. A 5.0, 10.0, or other scale needs an institution-approved conversion or a different tool; do not rescale it by guesswork.
Next determine whether the displayed credits are actually GPA hours. Pass, no-pass, incomplete, withdrawal, audit, and transfer entries may earn credit, appear on a record, or satisfy a requirement without contributing grade points. This page visibly excludes P, NP, I, and W under its declared workflow, but that convenience is not a ruling about another institution. The denominator must contain only the credits that the applicable policy says belong in the GPA.
Rebuild the weighted average from quality-point rows
Keeping every multiplication visible makes a mistaken scale value or credit entry easier to find than working backward from one final decimal.
- Pair one point value with one credit value
For every included course, copy the institution-assigned numeric grade points and the GPA credits. A four-credit course must influence the result four times as much as a one-credit course with the same grade.
- Add quality points before dividing
Multiply each row, sum those products, and divide once by total included credits. For example, a 3-credit course at 4.0 and a 1-credit course at 3.0 yield 15 quality points over 4 credits, or 3.75.
- Reconcile the denominator
Compare the included-credit total with the source record. A correct numerator divided by credits that should have been excluded still produces the wrong institutional estimate.

Keep repeats, forgiveness, and transcript precision outside the formula
- Do not automatically delete the first attempt when a course is repeated. Illinois, for example, has eligibility and filing conditions for grade replacement, and some repeat outcomes cause both grades to count.
- Do not add transfer grades merely because transfer credit was awarded. Duke states that transfer grades are excluded from its GPA, while other institutions may report separate or combined figures.
- Retain full internal precision. Illinois explicitly truncates the official display to two decimal places; a different school may round, truncate elsewhere, or calculate from stored quality points rather than the GPA visible on a transcript.
- Treat this as a planning record, not an official certification. Honors, probation, admission, and graduation decisions can use program-specific definitions even when the arithmetic looks familiar.
Use the target view as a scenario, not a promised outcome

A result above 4.3 means the target is outside this page's declared scale for that credit plan; it does not prove that every institutional recovery path is impossible.
