Recover the credits represented by the current GPA
A cumulative GPA is meaningful here only when it is paired with the attempted GPA credits that produced it. Multiply the current GPA by those credits to reconstruct the old quality-point balance, then retain both values for the audit. Notre Dame's registrar states the governing identity directly: cumulative GPA is total quality points from all terms divided by total attempted credits from all terms. Enter zero prior credits only for a genuinely empty earlier record, and use zero as the matching prior GPA.
The 0–10 input band is a guardrail, not a claim that every value belongs to one universal grading system. Old and new entries must use the same school-issued scale and the same inclusion policy; this page does not convert a 10-point record into a 4-point record. By contrast, the separate course-by-course GPA calculator has a declared 0.0–4.3 direct-entry boundary for its grade rows and common letter preset. Choose that narrower workspace to translate and total individual courses only when the institution's values fit it.
Match the new-work path to the record you actually have
Both entry paths create a new quality-point numerator and credit denominator, but they begin from different evidence. Use one path per calculation instead of counting a term twice.
Issued term summary
Enter the term GPA and the exact GPA credits behind it when a grade report has already supplied both. Their product is the new quality-point amount. Keep the term value on the same declared scale as the prior record.
Numeric course ledger
Enter an institution-approved numeric grade-point value and matching GPA credits for every included course. Each row contributes grade points times credits. The calculator does not infer letter values, percentage conversions, exclusions, repeat treatment, or transfer rules.
Unfinished course evidence
An assignment percentage is not yet a GPA point value. Audit weighted assignments with the grade calculator and wait for the institution's final course conversion before adding that work to a transcript-style scenario.

- Reconstruct prior quality points
A 3.2 GPA over 45 attempted GPA credits represents 144 quality points in this planning model. Use an unrounded current value or official quality-point total when the record supplies one; a shortened transcript GPA can introduce reconstruction error.
- Build the incoming contribution
Courses carrying numeric points 4, 3, and 4 over 4, 2, and 3 credits contribute 16, 6, and 12 quality points. The new ledger therefore contains 34 points across 9 credits and has a term GPA of 3.777777… .
- Join both sides once
The visible relationship is prior quality points plus new quality points, divided by prior credits plus new credits. Here it is (144 + 34) ÷ (45 + 9) = 178 ÷ 54 = 3.296296… . The result displays 3.2963, while the calculation retains the unrounded value.

Unequal record lengths
The term-summary example combines 3.2 over 45 credits with 3.6 over 15 credits. It reconstructs 144 and 54 quality points, then returns 198 ÷ 60 = 3.3 rather than the unweighted mean 3.4.
Empty prior history
The course-list example starts at 0 GPA over 0 credits, then adds a three-credit course at 4 points and a three-credit course at 0 points. Twelve quality points across six credits gives 2, proving that the empty-record rule does not divide by zero.
Alternate declared scale
The 10-point example combines 8 over 30 credits with 9 over 10 credits. It returns (240 + 90) ÷ 40 = 8.25 without pretending that either number is a U.S. 4-point GPA or converting it to one.
Solve either side of a same-scale target plan
The fixed-horizon path solves the cumulative equation for a future average. If G is the current GPA, C the current credits, T the desired cumulative GPA, and F the future credits, the requirement is [T × (C + F) − G × C] ÷ F. For a current 3.2 over 45 credits, a target of 3.4 after 15 more credits requires exactly 4.0 over those future credits and 60 additional quality points.
The maintained-average path solves for credits instead. Let E be the expected future GPA. When the current GPA is below the target and E is above it, required continuous credits equal C × (T − G) ÷ (E − T). Starting at 3.2 over 45 credits, reaching 3.4 while maintaining 3.8 gives 45 × 0.2 ÷ 0.4 = 22.5 future credits. That is a continuous planning value, not permission to round down: actual course credits are usually discrete, so test a feasible course combination again.
A target at or below the current GPA is already secured under this bounded model and needs zero future credits. If the target is still unmet while the expected future GPA is at or below that target, no finite positive credit count can close the gap; the planner reports that state rather than presenting zero as a solution. The credits-needed path also rejects zero current credits because no unique positive minimum exists from an empty history.
Declare the maximum of the same scale so both paths can validate their GPA inputs. A required average above that maximum or an unreachable maintained-average result is not a universal academic verdict: adding a different horizon, improving the expected average, or an officially approved repeat or forgiveness action can change the governing record. If one final assessment still determines a course result, use the final exam calculator first; a predicted exam percentage cannot be inserted directly as GPA points.
Reconcile transcript policy before acting on the projection
- Confirm included outcomes and grade values with the registrar. SUNY Empire, for example, publishes a 4.00-to-0.00 table, excludes several non-letter outcomes, and does not base its institutional GPA on prior transfer credit or prior-learning assessment.
- Do not subtract an earlier attempt by intuition. SUNY Empire's current policy includes the highest repeated grade only after specified conditions, whereas Oregon says all attempts in its repeat categories count toward its GPA. Those policies cannot both be replaced by one automatic forgiveness switch.
- Separate GPA credits from degree credits. Oregon states that grades from other institutions do not count toward the UO GPA even when transfer coursework is subject to repeat rules; another institution can display or combine transfer work differently.
- Read calculator precision as presentation, not certification. This page shows up to four decimal places and removes trailing zeros. Illinois instead says its official transcript shows two decimal places and truncates rather than rounds, so the governing school decides the final display and standing decision.
- Keep a dated note of the scale, included credits, repeat and forgiveness assumptions, transfer treatment, and source policy. The registrar's recalculated quality points and credits supersede this estimate for honors, probation, graduation, admission, or any other official decision.
