Margin divides the difference between revenue and direct cost by revenue. It is suited to statements such as 'twenty cents of each sales dollar remain after the entered direct cost.' That interpretation stays tied to the selling-price denominator.
Markup starts from cost
Markup divides the same dollar difference by direct cost. A merchant who begins with an established cost and wants a cost-based price can use the Markup Calculator. The numerical rate will differ from margin even when cost, price, and gross profit are identical.
Net margin continues farther down the statement
Gross margin does not subtract every operating expense, interest item, extraordinary charge, or tax. A healthy gross margin may coexist with a net loss when the remaining expense structure is too large, so the result should not be advertised as final profitability.

Start with a defensible revenue denominator

Revenue should represent the same commercial scope as the direct cost beneath it. A per-unit comparison needs per-unit revenue and per-unit cost; a monthly comparison needs the month's recognized sales and the corresponding direct costs. Mixing a list price for one unit with the cost of a case, or a gross order total with only part of the order cost, produces an attractive percentage that has no stable business meaning.

Returns, allowances, and discounts affect the revenue basis when they reduce the amount the business actually earns from the transaction. Before using a promotional price, verify the reduction with the Discount Calculator and decide whether the margin review should use the sticker price, checkout price, or settled revenue. Label that choice so later comparisons use the same convention.

Gross margin is undefined when revenue is zero because the calculation divides by revenue. A loss-making sale can still be represented when revenue is positive and direct cost exceeds it: gross profit becomes negative and so does gross margin. Hiding that sign or forcing every percentage into a zero-to-one-hundred range would conceal the result that needs attention most.

Build one consistent direct-cost boundary

The formula cannot decide which expenses belong in cost of goods or cost of service. Management must choose a policy that fits the decision and apply it consistently.

Match inventory, materials, fulfillment labor, packaging, and other direct inputs to the revenue period or unit they helped produce.
State whether outbound freight, marketplace commissions, card-processing fees, and returns are inside direct cost or reported as separate operating lines.
Do not insert rent, general administration, financing, or income tax into one scenario while omitting them from the comparison scenario and still call both figures gross margin.

Solve the implied revenue
For positive direct cost and a target gross margin below 100%, implied revenue equals cost divided by one minus the target rate. Keep the raw result through the analysis, then apply a documented currency and price-ending rule.
Test volume and fixed expenses
A gross-margin target does not reveal how many units must be sold to cover fixed costs. Use contribution and break-even analysis with realistic volume, variable-cost, and fixed-cost assumptions before calling the price commercially sufficient.
Stress the selling conditions
Repeat the calculation for expected returns, negotiated discounts, fulfillment variation, and channel fees. A single point estimate is less useful than a small set of clearly labeled scenarios that show when gross profit turns negative.

Connect media cost to profit only after attribution is defined

Advertising exposure is not itself revenue. Do not subtract a campaign budget from one product's sale without documenting how that cost was assigned.
