Create a roof-plane ledger from horizontal projections
The worked rectangle is 40 ft by 30 ft, a 1,200 ft² horizontal projection. At 6:12, the slope factor is approximately 1.118, so the calculated sloped area is 1,341.64 ft². This approach can represent both sides of a simple gable when the measured rectangle is the entire horizontal roof footprint and both sides share one pitch. Document that interpretation on the sketch rather than assuming length and width mean the same thing to every reviewer.
Complex roofs should be divided into non-overlapping planes and projections, with pitch recorded for each. Measure eave and rake overhangs if they are absent from wall dimensions. Preserve three different rounding events

Keep 1,341.64 ft² as the geometric handoff. Do not round each small plane prematurely, because repeated rounding can distort the combined roof.

- Round selected packages
At the entered coverage of 33.333 ft² per package and zero allowance, the example requires 41 packages. GAF's HDZ instructions publish a particular three-bundle combination covering 98.4 ft², which demonstrates why the current selected product data must replace any generic one-third-square assumption.
Derive allowance from roof geometry and product rules
Simple uninterrupted planes
Straight courses on a measured rectangle may produce reusable end cuts. Quantify starter, ridge, hip, and field material separately because they may use different products and exposures.
Valleys, hips, penetrations, and patterns
Cut direction, shingle offset, valley method, flashing, and small planes change offcut reuse. The allowance must come from the actual layout, tear-off uncertainty, breakage, and desired repair stock; no universal waste factor is built into roof area.
Package and lot constraints
Check bundles per pallet, color or lot coordination, minimum order, returns, and discontinued-product reserve. Enter declared coverage exactly as the label or installation instructions state it.
Complete the roof system beyond field covering
A field-covering count excludes or only indirectly reflects underlayment, ice barriers, ventilation, drip edge, flashing, valley lining, fasteners, sealants, starter, ridge and hip caps, deck replacement, disposal, and fall-protection systems. Review the 2024 IRC model provisions, the code edition actually adopted locally, the roof-covering approval, and current manufacturer instructions. Product-specific minimum slopes and details belong to the selected assembly, not to the package arithmetic.
If deck replacement is in scope, count approved structural panels in the plywood calculator after inspection defines replacement zones. Framing lumber can be tallied with the board-foot calculator only when that is the supplier's purchasing basis. Roof work carries serious fall and weather risks: a takeoff does not approve access, temporary protection, structural loading, or installation. Keep quantities tied to drawings and have qualified parties resolve condition, code, and safety decisions.
