The tape equation begins with landmarks, not body weight
The male path combines height with the difference between waist and neck circumferences. The female path combines height with waist plus hip minus neck. Both equations use base-10 logarithms to predict body density, which is then converted to estimated body-fat percentage. Weight enters only afterward, when the percentage is multiplied by body mass to derive estimated fat mass and fat-free mass.
That sequence explains why a weight change does not alter the percentage if every circumference and height stays fixed, yet it does change the two mass outputs. If you already know a body-fat estimate and want to index the derived fat-free mass to height, take that explicitly sourced percentage to the FFMI Calculator. Its reliability cannot exceed the reliability of the percentage supplied here.
Choose the historical sex-specific circumference path deliberately
The selector chooses a published equation and its required measurements; it is not a statement about gender identity.
Male regression
The original Naval Health Research Center report developed its relationship in male Navy personnel ages 18 to 56. Hip circumference is not part of this branch and should not be silently inserted.
Female regression
The separate report studied female Navy personnel ages 18 to 44. Hip circumference is required because its equation uses the combined waist-plus-hip-minus-neck value.
Neither branch
When neither published model is appropriate, the calculator cannot invent coefficients. A qualified professional can help select a measurement method that fits the person's body, clinical question, and circumstances.
Repeat the tape before trusting the decimal
Landmark and tension differences can matter more than the displayed precision.
- Prepare one flexible tape
Use the same non-stretching tape and unit throughout. Keep it horizontal at the specified landmark and snug without compressing soft tissue.
- Locate each site anew
For this implementation, follow the field labels: neck just below the larynx, the specified waist or abdomen landmark, and the widest hip point for the female equation. Do not mix a fashion-waist measurement with an abdominal one from another protocol.
- Take a consistency check
Repeat the sequence under similar posture and breathing. A large disagreement calls for remeasurement rather than averaging clearly incompatible readings.
Underwater-weighing calibration does not make tape a direct assay
The 1984 reports predicted body density from circumferences, then converted density to percent fat. The National Academies' review shows cross-validation standard errors of several percentage points for military equations. A one-decimal display therefore describes calculation formatting, not one-decimal biological certainty.
For a low-cost weight-relative-to-height screen, the Adult BMI Calculator uses different evidence and makes no body-fat estimate. For abdominal distribution, the Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator uses one waist measure in a current public-health screening framework. Similar-looking outputs should not be treated as interchangeable validations.
Interpret change without manufacturing a health category
This page intentionally omits athletic, ideal, essential-fat, obesity, and military pass/fail labels.
- Record the equation branch, unit, landmarks, date, and measurer whenever comparing two estimates; otherwise a protocol change can masquerade as a body change.
- Do not use the result to diagnose disease, eating disorders, malnutrition, or fitness, and do not infer drug use from a high or low estimate.
- Seek professional measurement and interpretation when pregnancy, edema, amputation, rapid weight change, unusual anatomy, or a clinical decision makes a field regression inadequate.

From tape measurements to an estimated percentage
The calculator first converts all lengths to centimeters, applies one historical sex-specific body-density regression, and then converts density to a body-fat estimate. Age is not part of either equation.Male equationHeight, neck, and abdomen
