The upper measurement must have one declared meaning
Before entering numbers, choose whether the upper loop represents shoulder circumference or bust/chest circumference. Those paths pass different landmarks and are not substitutes. The calculator reports which basis was selected, then compares it with waist and hip values taken during the same session. Changing from bust to shoulders later can change the label even though the person's body has not changed, because the definition of the input changed.
The three loops are intended for broad apparel proportions, not the detailed dimensions needed to draft or fit a garment. A bra requires its own underbust/full-bust method and physical try-on, which is why the bra size starting guide asks a different question. Sleeve length, shoulder breadth, rise, torso length, posture, and tissue distribution can all affect clothing while remaining absent from this classifier.
Collect all three circumferences in one calm session
- Set the tape unit once
Use inches or centimetres for every field. Ratios are unit-invariant only when the same unit is used throughout. If notes arrive in mixed units, normalize them with the unit conversion calculator before classification rather than relabeling a number.
- Follow the selected upper path
For bust/chest, hold the tape level around the intended fullest torso landmark without compressing it. For the shoulder option, follow the workbench illustration and preserve that same path on a repeat measurement. Record which path was used, because the bare number cannot reveal it later.
- Locate natural waist and full hip separately
Measure the natural-waist loop at the chosen anatomical waist rather than automatically using a trouser waistband. Measure the hip around the fullest hip-and-seat level. Keep the tape horizontal, stand neutrally, and avoid pulling it tight enough to indent the body.
- Repeat instead of averaging incompatible paths
A second reading on the same landmarks can expose a slipped tape. If values differ materially, retake them; do not average a high hip with a full hip or a shoulder loop with a chest loop, because those are different quantities rather than noisy versions of one measurement.
Editable thresholds turn measurements into a declared editorial rule
The default 5% and 25% values reproduce one cited fashion-editorial convention. Who What Wear is visible here as provenance for those two editable styling cutoffs, not as scientific authority. They are not ISO, clinical, or population-validated thresholds and can be changed to examine sensitivity.
Upper-to-hip balance tolerance
The calculation expresses the signed upper-minus-hip difference relative to the larger of the two. Under a 5% tolerance, values close enough are treated as balanced; beyond it, the larger loop determines whether the result leans upper- or hip-dominant. A measurement exactly near the boundary deserves a repeat before a label is emphasized.
Waist-definition threshold
With the 25% default, the waist must be at least that much smaller than both the chosen upper loop and the hip to satisfy the displayed definition rule. For 36-27-36, the waist is exactly 25% below each equal outer circumference, so the reference rule produces hourglass-style balanced proportions.
A different rule can produce a different name
Increasing the balance tolerance can join previously distinct upper and hip measurements; lowering the waist threshold can mark more cases as defined. The result must therefore retain its threshold settings. It is a conditional statement—under this rule—not an inherent or permanent type.
Three inputs show the rule, the realistic branch, and the boundary
Each example uses inches only for readability; converting every circumference to centimetres preserves the ratios and label. The category is conditional on the displayed 5% and 25% settings.
Simple threshold example: 36, 27, and 36
Choose bust/chest as the upper basis and enter 36 in upper, 27 in waist, and 36 in hips. The outer difference is 0%, so those measurements are balanced. The waist is exactly (36 − 27) ÷ 36 = 25% smaller than each outer value, so the default rule returns Hourglass-style balanced proportions. The workbench's example button fills these fields but does not calculate automatically.
Apparel-planning example: 36, 30, and 40
Enter 36 in upper, 30 in waist, and 40 in hips. The upper-to-hip difference is (36 − 40) ÷ 40 = −10%, outside the 5% balance tolerance. Because the full hip is the larger outer measurement, the four-label convention returns Triangle-style proportions. Carry the actual 36, 30, and 40 measurements—not merely the label—to the garment chart.
Boundary retake: change only the waist to 27.01
Keep both outer measurements at 36 in but enter a 27.01 in waist. The waist reduction becomes about 24.97%, just below the default 25% requirement, so the result changes to Rectangle-style balanced proportions. A hundredth of an inch is smaller than ordinary tape-placement variation; reproduce the arithmetic, then retake the measurement rather than treating either label as permanent.
Audit a boundary result before shopping from it
- Use the basic calculator to reproduce a simple difference or division if a category near the threshold surprises you, while remembering that the workbench's documented denominator and comparison order still control the rule.
- Retake the relevant circumferences when a few millimetres would change the label. The published FFIT reliability research found that alternate placement definitions changed classifications for the same scans in a substantial share of cases; measurement language is not a cosmetic detail.
- Carry actual measurements to the retailer. A category name is not a dress, trouser, or pattern size, and a brand's size chart may require additional dimensions or different landmarks.
- Use neutral language. No one silhouette is more healthy, attractive, feminine, masculine, athletic, or normal than another. The mathematical label does not support those judgments.
Do not translate a styling category into health risk
Circumference distribution can be studied for many purposes, but this four-label workbench was built for apparel shorthand and has no validated clinical endpoint. It omits height, age, medical history, pregnancy, muscle and fat distribution, measurement protocol required by a clinician, and population-specific evidence. If the intended question is the explicitly defined waist-to-height ratio, use the waist-to-height ratio calculator and read its own health boundary rather than reinterpreting a silhouette name.
The classification also should not drive weight loss, exercise, surgery, diet, or mental-health decisions. Anyone can compare the entered arithmetic, but the default fashion-editorial cutoffs have not been established as a population-valid or gender-neutral classification standard. Body image distress deserves supportive, qualified care, not repeated threshold chasing. A useful record contains the date, chosen upper basis, unit, three tape values, tolerance settings, and apparel task. That makes the result reproducible while keeping it modest: a temporary way to describe entered clothing proportions, not a verdict about the person measured.
