The calculator converts a handling unit's greatest packaged dimensions and tendered weight into pounds per cubic foot, then maps that density to the published 13-subprovision scale. The resulting class is an estimate for planning, not a commodity classification decision, carrier quote, tariff interpretation, or promise that the shipment will be accepted under that class.

Measure the packaged extremes
Use the greatest finished length, width, and height, including pallet deck, overhang, banding, corner protection, irregular projections, and anything that prevents adjacent freight from occupying the space. Product dimensions inside the package understate the cube offered to the carrier.

Convert the occupied volume to cubic feet, divide packaged pounds by that volume, and retain the unrounded density for the band lookup. NMFTA's 13-subprovision density-and-class table documents the planning breaks used here. A value on a threshold belongs to the band defined by the published boundary, so early rounding can move a shipment into the wrong displayed class.

Recheck a simple geometric cube and any unit conversion before returning to the LTL workflow. The freight result still requires exterior shipping dimensions and tendered weight; a product-volume figure, liquid capacity, or usable interior crate volume is not interchangeable with occupied freight cube.

Handling

An unstable, top-heavy, unusually long, fragile, or non-stackable unit may require equipment or labor beyond an ordinary pallet. Packaging and securement affect how safely the freight can be moved through terminals even when density is unchanged.

Stowability

Hazard restrictions, unusual shape, inability to stack, protrusions, or incompatibility with neighboring freight can consume trailer space differently from a rectangular density calculation. The cube is still useful, but it does not describe every loading constraint.

Liability and commodity identity

Value, susceptibility to damage or theft, perishability, hazardous characteristics, and the precise commodity description can affect the applicable NMFC item. Consult NMFTA's classification-factor explanation rather than presenting a density band as a complete commodity ruling.

Classification and carrier pricing are separate handoffs

NMFTA describes freight class as part of the NMFC classification system; its freight-class overview is the appropriate starting point for understanding the concept. Confirm the exact commodity description, NMFC item and subprovision, packaging, declared characteristics, and current classification with the responsible party before tender. The calculator cannot search the NMFC, issue a binding classification, or resolve a dispute.

A class estimate also is not a price. An LTL quote can depend on route, accessorials, minimum charges, fuel, account terms, pickup and delivery conditions, and carrier rules. For an ordinary parcel already supported by a current entered amount, use the parcel quote audit or prepare package facts with the parcel quote worksheet.
