The fence-post question comes before the subtraction
From January 10 to January 11, one midnight boundary separates the dates. An elapsed convention therefore reports one day. A list that includes both labelled calendar dates contains two entries. Neither answer is inherently dishonest; the error is publishing a number without saying whether the ending date was excluded or included. Billing nights, notice periods, attendance dates, and project schedules may choose different conventions.

- Check the sign
Confirm whether the end follows or precedes the start. Direction can be essential when reviewing lateness, lead time, or a backdated event.
- Inspect a known landmark
For a long span, verify one leap February or year boundary against a calendar. This tests the actual rule rather than a memorized 365-day approximation.
Calendar, duration, and countdown language should stay distinct
A calendar calculator may add months, count labelled dates, or display a month grid; the keyword alone does not settle the arithmetic.
