A duration answers how much time, not when an event occurs. In 2 hours 15 minutes, the hour field can grow beyond 23 because it is a quantity; it does not wrap at midnight. The calculator first gives each operand its selected sign and converts the three fields to one signed second total. Addition combines those totals.
