A duration answers how much time, not when an event occurs. In 2 hours 15 minutes, the hour field can grow beyond 23 because it is a quantity; it does not wrap at midnight. The calculator first gives each operand its selected sign and converts the three fields to one signed second total. Addition combines those totals. Subtraction reverses the sign of the right-hand total before combining it. Only after the arithmetic is finished is the magnitude balanced back into hours, minutes, and seconds.
